This Is My Liver

Performance with textile props. MFA Degree Show (2024).

This work was born out of my encounter with a painting of Bader Chaker Al Sayyab by Marwan Kassab-Bachi at Tate Modern. The liver painted over Al Sayyab’s head made me believe that it must be stemming from one of the Iraqi poet’s writings. ‘Tammouz Jaykour’ was the closest poem to reflect what is depicted in that painting. In the poem, the liver represents Jaykour; Al Sayyab’s hometown. I have been studying metaphors of land such as carpets, floor tiles and relaxing bodies, so the liver/land metaphor led me to explore cultural references and movements that are associated with land. The 7 minutes piece utilises some Brechtian techniques to compose several frames of interaction with a bundle of textiles and hand-sewn pillows.
